Who needs HEIC → WebP?

People publishing iPhone photos on the web: bloggers, shop owners photographing products, and developers filling a site's media library. The usual workflow converts HEIC to JPG first and lets the CMS make WebP later — a double lossy hop. Converting HEIC to WebP directly skips the JPG middleman, keeping one generation of compression instead of two.

Both formats are modern codecs — HEIC compresses with HEVC intra-frames, WebP with VP8 — so the output size stays close to the original, unlike a HEIC → JPG conversion where files typically grow 1.5–2×.

Two things to know before converting

  • Safari can't create WebP. Its canvas API decodes WebP but does not encode it — run this conversion in Chrome, Edge or Firefox. (The JPG and PNG tabs work everywhere.)
  • Metadata is stripped. The canvas re-encode drops EXIF — GPS location and capture date do not travel into the WebP. A privacy plus for publishing; keep the HEIC originals if you need the data.

When NOT to convert HEIC to WebP

  • Photos for print, email or documents — those pipelines want JPG; WebP support outside browsers is still patchy.
  • Uploading to platforms that re-encode (Instagram, most social media) — they will re-compress anyway; give them the highest-quality source.
  • Archival — keep the HEIC master; export WebP copies per use.

Why is this better than HEIC → JPG for the web?

Why does it fail in Safari?
