Why width-based resizing covers almost everything

Nearly every real-world requirement is a width: content images at 1200 px, marketplace photos at 1080, e-mail signatures at 600, avatars at 400. Height follows from the aspect ratio — forcing both dimensions is how photos get stretched. This tool takes one number, scales with high-quality smoothing, and refuses to upscale: enlargement can't add detail, only blur, so a smaller-than-target photo passes through at native size (the status line shows the real output dimensions).

Pick the output format by destination: JPG for general use, PNG when transparency or crisp graphics matter, WebP for your own site. Shrinking pixel count is also the single most effective compression step — for finer size control afterwards, the compressor adds a live quality slider.

When NOT to resize

To make an image bigger — upscaling manufactures blur, not detail; this tool deliberately won't do it.
Before further editing — edit at full resolution and resize as the last step.
When cropping is what you mean — resizing keeps the whole frame; if you need a square or circle, crop instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can I set an exact height instead?

Width is the control; height follows the aspect ratio to prevent distortion. For a fixed height, compute the matching width (height × aspect) — or crop first to the shape you need.

What happens to a photo narrower than my width?

It passes through at its native size — upscaling is refused by design, and the status line shows the actual output dimensions so nothing happens silently.

Does resizing reduce file size too?

Dramatically — pixel count is the biggest size factor. A 4032px photo resized to 1200px typically drops ~85% before any quality reduction.
